ABOUT US:
The Kawartha Ecological Growers (KEG) is a privately operated, grassroot support system for small scale food producers in the western Kawartha Lakes. As such, KEG addresses the challenges of small agriculture specific to the Kawartha Lakes area. These challenges would include such things as access to a dependable market, determining transportation logistics, addressing labour shortages, and facilitating the sharing of information, agricultural inputs and advancing agrarian knowledge amongst our grower-members.
It takes a considerable amount of time and energy to effectively market and deliver goods from a small scale agriculutural operation. Groups such as Kawartha Ecological Growers allow farmers to focus on what they do best – farming.
KEG has been established since 2005, and is made up of over fifteen different growers. Together we produce a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and meats. Several Toronto fine dining restaurants have trusted KEG to supply their restaurants with top quality goods for three years now. This list includes Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar, Drake Hotel, Niagara Street Cafe, Chez Victor, Healthy Butcher, Vertical Restaurant, Veritas Restaurant, Czehoski and more.
All of KEG’s produce is picked and delivered as fresh as humanly possible – often you will recieve items that has been harvested within less than 24 hours of delivery.
While not every KEG farm is certified organic, all farms grow “good, clean, fair food” – meaning the items taste great, are produced in an environmentally sustainable manner, and the growers and their staff recieve a fair wage for their work.
